This educational presentation covers the eligibility and entitlement factors for retirement, disability and Medicare. Presented by Robert Fenn of the Social Security Administration.

Social Security is a part of everyone's life and is a major source of income for most people of retirement age.

  • Nearly nine out of ten individuals age 65 and older receive Social Security benefits.
  • Social Security benefits represent about 33% of the income of the elderly.
  • Among elderly Social Security beneficiaries, 48% of married couples and 69% of unmarried persons receive 50% or more of their income from Social Security.
  • Among elderly Social Security beneficiaries, 21% of married couples and about 44% of unmarried persons rely on Social Security for 90% or more of their income.
  • With the expected wave of "Baby Boomers" reaching retirement age, and employers providing financial planning information to workers nearing retirement age, Social Security information and speakers are a welcome resource.

Maybe you have these questions:

  • Have I earned enough quarters of coverage to receive benefits?
  • At what age should I file?  Is it too early to think about Social Security?
  • Can I work and receive Social Security benefits?
  • I am divorced. Can I file on a previous spouse’s earnings?
  • What is the quickest way to receive my benefit?
  • Do I have to file for Medicare?
  • What if I paid into a different retirement system? Am I still eligible to receive a benefit?
